I first
met Teddy Pantelas back in 1992. I was playing at small club in Cleveland
called The Bop Stop. It was the last set when we opened things up and
invited folks to sit in and share their music. When Teddy walked in with
his shy and friendly smile, there was no hint at what was to come. Teddy
did not have the gunslinger attitude so prevalent in today's young jazz
musicians. Instead, he quietly opened his guitar case and took his instrument
out, patiently waiting his turn. When finally he plugged in his guitar
and hit the first note, everyone in the crowd seemed to stop whatever
they were doing to listen to what Teddy was saying through his guitar.
He brought the house down. His playing spoke
volumes that night... And so began a deep musical and personal friendship.
It is with great pleasure that I am able to introduce Teddy's new CD,
It Makes Me Glad. To start off with Teddy has surrounded himself with
some wonderful musicians for this project. Joining Teddy on guitar are
Bassist Jeff Grubbs, Drummer Darryl Pellegrini and Trumpeter Sean Jones.
These cats have played with everyone and can play every facet of jazz
from hard, groovin' swing to floating time. This is the perfect rhythm
section to compliment Teddy's style which is influenced by Pat Metheny,
Wes Montgomery and perhaps some Keith Jarrett thrown in for good measure. Particularly inspiring is the track Shooting Star which Teddy has dedicated to his father. In this track you can hear the full compliment of Teddy's playing. You can really feel the warmth and love Teddy projects in the way he stretches harmonic and rhythmic boundries of this song. It's a beautiful and stirring tribute to his dad. I feel blessed to have been able to witness the growth and blossuming of Teddy's music over the years. Teddy has gone from being a great guitarist to being a great musician. I hope you enjoy this CD and find it as inspirational and uplifting as I have. -Jack
